Asda and Tesco announce one pound goods lines

Monday 5th January 2009

Tesco has quickly followed Asda's lead with the announcement of a similar one pound goods program to that already announced by its fierce rival. However, consumer groups are concerned that the one pound range of goods is nothing more than a marketing campaign to attract the attention of the masses and increase sales of other ranges.

There is also a suggestion that the nutritional value of the various food items on offer is minimal to say the least and does not contain many of the daily requirements as suggested by the government. Yet against we see the UK supermarket sector grabbing the headlines at a time when UK consumers are obsessed with value for money and the cheapest goods on offer. Even though the supermarkets have strength in depth there are serious concerns that smaller independent chains and individual shops will struggle to match these prices and see more business walk out of the door.

Supermarkets in the UK now sell literally everything you could ever want from electricals to alcohol, from insurance to bank accounts and more. The UK high street and more importantly local economies have been seriously impacted by the ever competitive position of the UK supermarket sector amid claims that many local economies have been decimated by the larger chains in years gone by.
