Travel insurance advice issued for over-65s

Wednesday 25th June 2008

Travel insurance can still be found for over-65s - if the holidaymaker looks hard enough.

New analysis from Saga suggests that even a 100 year old can find cover - even though previous figures from charity Age Concern suggest that just eight per cent of the UK's travel insurance providers do not enforce upper age limits.

According to the travel insurance firm, these upper limits are being increased by many providers, due to rising longevity rates in the UK - meaning that older people will find it easier to take out cover in future.

Paul Green, head of Saga Group Communications, added: "As the population ages and remains healthier for longer we would expect the general insurers to increase their age limits.

"This is also because insurers now have a better understanding and improved systems; they are more sophisticated on how they rate older ages and include cover for pre-existing conditions."

Mr Green added that the oldest person he knew of who had managed to find travel insurance "was a lady celebrating her 100th birthday".
